Symptoms Pitting on pressure, oedema, heaviness in the body, horripilation, discolouration of the skin, are the general signs and symptoms of Sopha. its common varieties are as follows.

Vataja Sopha (Hrd-Janya Sopha)

This type of oedema is caused by the diminished pumping power of the heart. The oedema first appears on the feet, and increases during the day and tends to subside in the night. On pressing, the skin is depressed but immediately after releasing the pressure regains its position.

Pittaja Sopha (Yakrt Janya Sopha)

The oedema duc to the derangement of Yakrt (liver) is known as Pittaja Sopha. it first appears on the abdomen and then gradually spreads up.

Kaphaja Sopha (Vrkka Janya Sopha)

Oedema caused by the impaired function of kidneys is known as Kaphaja Sopha. it first appears in the pits of the eyes and later spread to the other parts of the body.


Treatment
Salt restricted diet should be given.

Single Drugs

1. Svarasa (juice) of bark of Arjuna-14 to 28 ml. to be taken twice a day. it is useful for Hrd-Janya-Sopha.

2. Svarasa (juice) of root of Punarnava (pigweed)-14to 28 ml. to taken twice a day.

3. Kalka ofArdraka (ginger)-6 to 12 g. to be taken with 6 to 12 g. Gua (jaggery) twice a day.

4. Svarasa (juice) ofArdraka (ginger)-7 to 14 ml. to be taken with 6 to 12 g. old Gua (jaggery) twice a day.

5. Powder of Suhi (dried ginger)-3 to 6 g. to be taken with 3 to 6 g. Gua (jaggery) twice a day.

6. Powdered bark of Arjuna (arjun)-1 to 3 g. to be taken with 100 to 250 ml. milk twice a day.

Simple Preparations

1. Powder of Pippali-1 g. to be taken with Gomutra-7 to 14 ml. and Guggulu-1 g. twice a day.

2. Equal part of Gomutra and Eraa Taila-14 to 28 ml. to be taken twice a day.

3. Powder of equal part of fruit rind of Haritaki (chebulic myrobalan) Suhi (dried ginger), wood of Devadaru (deodar)-3 to 6 g. to be taken with milk twice a day.

4. Powder of equal part of whole plant of Kiratatikta (chirata) and Suhi (dried ginger)-3 to 6 g. to be taken with Punarnvasaka Kvatha-14 to 28 ml. twice a day.

5. Powder of equal part of fruit rind of Haritaki (chebulic myrobalan) rhizome of Vaca (sweat flag), root of Rasna (indian groundsel), fruit of Pippali (long pepper), roots of Mustaka (motha), Sai (zeodary) and Puskara (costus root), and Suhi (dried ginger), mixed together with equal weight of powdered bark of Arjuna-3 to 6 g. to be taken with 100 to 250 ml. milk twice a day.

6. Decoction of equal part of wood of Devadaru (deodar), root of Punarnava (pigweed), and Suhi (dried ginger)-14 to 28 ml. to be taken with Gomutra-7 to 14 ml. twice a day.

7. Decoction of equal part of root of Punarnava (pigweed), bark of Nimba (neem), leaf of Paola (a variety of small cucumber), stem of Guuci, wood of Devadaru (deodar), and fruit rind of Haritaki (chebulic myrobalan)-14 to 28 ml. to be taken twice a day.

8. Decoction of equal part of bark of Vasa, Guuci, whole plant of Brhati (yellow berried night shade)-14 to 28 ml. to be taken with 4 to 6 g. honey twice a day.

Compound Preparations

1. Suddha Silajatu-1 g. to be taken with Triphala-3 to 6 g. and 50 ml. warm water or 100 to 250 ml. milk or with powder of Haridara (turmeric)-3 g. and Gomutra (cows urine)-7 to 14 ml., twice a day.

2. Sivaksara Pacana Cura: 3 to 6 g. to be taken with warm water twice a day.

3. Vardhamana Pippali Yoga: Commencing dose is half Pippali. it is to be taken under the guidance of the specialist.

4. Punarnavadi Kvatha: 14 to 28 ml. to be taken twice a day.

5. Goksuradi Kvatha: 14 to 28 ml. to be taken twice a day.

6. Candraprabha Vai: 1 to 2 Vai to be taken with warm water twice a day.

7.Arogyavardhini Vai: 1 to 2 Vai to be taken with warm water twice a day.

8. Hrdayaraava Rasa: 60 to 120 mg. to be taken with honey to make a paste twice a day.

9. Srnga Bhasma: 120 to 250 mg. to be taken with 4 to 6 g. honey twice a day.

10. Jahara Mohara Pisi: 60 to 120 mg. to be taken with honey to make a paste twice a day.

11. Hajaralayahuda Pisi: 60 to 120 mg. to be taken with honey to make a paste twice a day.

12. MuktaSukti Pisi: 60 to 120 mg. to be taken with honey to make a paste twice a day.

13. Punarnava Maura: 1 g. to to be taken with 100 to 250 ml. milk twice a day.

14. Maura Bhasma: 1 g. to be taken with 100 to 250 ml. milk twice a day.

15. Punarvasava: 14 to 28 ml. to be taken with equal quantity of water twice a day after meal.

16. Arjunarisa: 14 to 28 ml. to be taken with equal quantity of water twice a day.

17. DaSamularisa: 14 to 28 ml. to be taken equal quantity of water twice a day after meal.

Pathya

Old Sali variety of rice, seeds of Kulattha (dolichos bean), Yava (barley) and Mudga (phaseolus bean); Karkoaki (a variety of cucumber), leaf of Sigru (horse radish), Mulaka (radish), leaf of Paola (a variety of small cucumber-snake gourd), whole plant of Punarnava (pigweed), root of Rasna (indian groundsel), fruit rind ofAmalaki (embelic myrobalan), milk and Takra (butter milk) are the useful articles of diet for the patient of Sopha.

Apathya

Navina Anna (freshly harvested cereals), Pisamaya Anna, Amla Rasa, Guru Dravya, Suska Saka (dried vegetable), curd, salt, Madya (wine), incompatible items of food in diet are harmful for the patients of Sopha. Avoid day sleep, sexual intercourse, suppression of calls of nature and long walks.

Treatment under Hrdroga, Udararoga and Vrkkaroga along with Pathya and Apathya thereto should be followed according to the cause of Sopha.
