Symptoms
Confusion of intellect, fickleness of mind; loss of memory, power of understanding and wits; no feeling of pleasure or grief, abnormal behaviour towards the society and duties; irregular and incoherent talk, restlessness, unsteadiness, agitation of the eyes and mental vacuity are the general signs and symptoms of Unmada.


Treatment
Single Drugs

1. Powder of root of Vaca (sweet flag) 1 to 2 g., to be taken twice daily with cows milk.

2. Svarasa obtained from the leaf of Brahmi (indian pennywort) 14 to 28 ml., to be taken with 100 to 250 ml. cows milk twice a day.

3. Paste (Kalka) prepared from the root of Sarpagandha (rauwolfia) 3 to 6 g., to be taken with 100 to 250 ml. of cows milk.

4. Powdered whole plant of Brahmi (indian pennywort) 1 to 3 g., to be taken with 4 to 6 g. honey or 100 to 250 ml. cows milk thrice a day.

5. Powdered root of Kusha (kooth) 2 g., to be taken with 4 to 6 g. honey twice a day.

6. Powdered root of Sarpagandha (rauwolfia) 1 to 2 g., to be taken with 100 to 250 ml. cows milk thrice a day.

7. Fluid obtained from the fruit of Narikela (coconut) 100 ml., to be taken with 5 to 10 g. Sarkara (raw sugar) twice a day.

8. Paste (Kalka) prepared from the whole plant of Sankhapuspi 12 to 24 g., to be taken with 100 to 250 ml. cows milk twice a day.

9. Powdered root of Jaamasi 1 to 3 g., to be taken twice a day with cows milk.

Simple Preparations

1. Puraa Ghrta (1 year old ghee of cow) 3 g., Vibhitaka Majja (decorticated seed of beleric myrobalan) 1.5 g., honey-3 g. and Sarkara (raw sugar) 5 to 10 g., to be taken with Dharosa Godugdha (freshly milched cows milk)-100 to 250 ml. twice a day.

Compound Preparations

1. Sarasvata Cura: 0.5 to 2 g., to be taken with 100 to 250 ml. cows milk twice a day.

2. Sarpagandha Vai: 1 to 2 Vai, to be taken with 100 to 250 ml. cows milk twice a day.

3. Draksasava: 14 to 28 ml., to be taken with equal quantity of water twice a day after meal.

4. Kalyaaka Ghrta: 6 to 12 g., to be taken twice a day with cows milk.

5. Maha-Paca Gavya Ghrta: 6 to 12 g., to be taken with cows milk twice a day.

Local Applications

1. Apply freshly prepared cows butter to the head of the patient.

2. Prepare a Lepa by grinding fruit rind ofAmalaki (embelic myrobalan) 25 to 50 g. in sufficient quantity of Takra (butter milk). Apply this Lepa (plaster) on the Brahmarandhra (crown of the head) once in the morning and retain till dry.

3. Lepa prepared from the fresh juice of leaf of Brahmi (indian pennywort) 60 ml., fresh juice of rhizome of Haridra (turmeric) 15 ml., powdered rhizome of Jaamasi (spikenard) 12 g. and Sarkara (raw sugar) 12 g. is to be applied on the Brahmarandhra (crown of the head) twice a day. it is to be retained till dry.

4. Himasagara Taila: to be applied on the head twice a day.

5. Visu Tail (Brhat): to be applied on the head twice a day.

Pathya

Sali variety of rice, Mudga (phaseolus bean), Dharosa Godugdha (freshly milched cows milk), Leaves of Brahmi (indian pennywort), Tauliya (a variety of amaranth) and Vastuka (a variety of chenopodium), leaf and fruit of Paola (a variety of small cucumber), fruit of Kusmaa (a variety of pumpkin gourd) and Draksa (raisin or grape fruit) are the useful articles of diet for the patient of Unmada.

Apathya

incompatible articles of food, hot spicy food and wines are harmful. Suppression of natural urges like sleep, hunger and thirst should be avoided.
